I want to get as close to original as possible. I'm even considering getting the early type one from Rimmer Bros. I will need to source the correct downpipe/autobox bracket (I've got the later type).

Trev, I think it was the one he's mentioned at the last couple of meetings. I've not had chance to get over there.

I needed to go to the local Asda so I jumped in the 1850 and it started up on the button so it was definitely the dying alternator that had run the battery down. I ended up taking a slightly scenic route home. With the most important jobs done (aside from the exhaust) I'm enjoying the car and it puts a smile on my face. When I went round to the garage yesterday to collect the inner wing, the garage owner noticed too.

I'm still waiting for the throttle springs to turn up in the post. At £4.50 delivered, it was worth getting them while I could. I've also bid on a pair of 3 way speakers. These are "Murphy" branded so they will be period perfect (I remember all the Murphy branded stuff in my mum's catalogue back in the 80s). I don't want to make any holes in my parcel shelf so I'm planning on using some double sided adhesive pads to keep them in place. I can run the speaker wires under the carpet so it will be like in my younger days when I fitted my Goodmans 3 way bass reflex speakers in my MK2 Cavalier back in 1992! I remember having a Philips radio/cassette with digital tuning which was quite a novelty back then.

There's an ebay advert for a Dolomite 1300 that's being broken so I've contacted the seller to enquire about the washer bottle bracket and a radio aerial. I've not heard back from him yet.

I mentioned that I'd seen some warm white LED car bulbs which would give the best of everything. I've gone and taken the plunge and ordered a couple of sidelight bulbs on ebay HERE. I'm also going to try the instrument/boot light bulbs at a later date. I've got a pair of stop/tail light bulbs to try. I had them in my Astra but they didn't work properly for some reason. They might be fine in the 1850. An LED conversion was low down on my priorities but I've gotta get stuff as and when I can because it doesn't hang around forever. Sticking with my sidelights, I've just rembered that my lenses don't have the partition betyween the sidelight and indicator. It hasn't failed the MoT like this but I would like to get hold of the partition or be able to make something up.

The throttle springs came in the post today so I fitted them at the soonest opportunity.
Image
I don't know if it has made any difference. I've kept the old ones just in case. I've been outbid on the Murphy speakers so I ended up letting them go. The bidding went mad in the last few minutes of the auction! The ones I saw on Amazon are these.
Image
I think they're more in keeping with the 70s period look. I took a look at the dashboard speaker and it would be a struggle to fit 2 speakers unless I went for small ones. I suppose it can be do-able.

Re the partitions I made a couple for a set i bought recently as they were slightly crusty.
I just cut around the crusty one using some thin zinctec.
Bring them around and we can sort, or i can fetch to the next meet.

Shouldn't the springs be fitted the other way round, particularly the middle one, with the hooked ends attached the carbs and the U shaped ends attached the the brackets?

The hooked ends are where they should be. I tried them the other way round. I know what I did wrong with the middle one. I should've inserted the end of the hook in at the front and not the back. I've just altered it and it looks better. Sometimes you need an extra pair of eyes so thanks for your input Jer.

I went back to the local exhaust place and they've given me a quote of £450 plus the dreaded VAT for a custom made stainless exhaust. The price does includes fitting. I'm tempted to get the Rimmer Bros exhaust even if some "fettling" will be needed. I need to get some more quotes before I make a final decision. I still need a tail pipe though so I'm hoping something will come up soon.

My early 1850 has had a Rimmers stainless rear section since 1997, its still in good condition. 2 years ago, in their christmas sale, i bought a matching middle section - it fitted straight on, no fettling needed at all.

Matt, that's reassuring. I'd have gone for a Club exhaust if it hadn't gone belly up but this is the next best thing.

Time to save those pennies...

I've taken off the SE wheels and I've loaded them up in the Astra in readiness for the Restoration Show tomorrow. I'll be doing some selling, swapping and maybe some buying if I can find what I'm after.

Today was great. I managed to get quite a few parts I needed. Steve came through with the exhaust rear section that I so badly needed. I got hold a Stromberg air cleaner should I ever want to change the carbs from SUs (this was a freebie from Mahesh). When I was at the Restoration Show, I bagged myself a chrome driver's door mirror for only £7.50 This wasn't on my list but you have to get stuff when you can. After the Restoration Show I followed Alun to his parts emporium. We did the wheel swap and I managed to obtain the washer bottle filler lid, a radio aerial and the bracket for the trip reset knob. When I got back I fitted the wheels (which came with the stainless trims so the ones I bought are surplus to requirements) so I now have a full set of steel wheels.
Image

This is the mirror I bought.
Image

Fitted to the driver's door.
Image

The washer bottle went from this.

To this.

I've still got to fit the exhaust rear section, the bracket from the trip reset knob (it was riveted on to the dashboard to the left of the steering column) and the radio aerial.
