Main beam fail

#1 Post by beeba »

Dipped headlights work perfectly, plunged into darkness on what should be beam. Am I right in thinking a new stalk is the way forward. Running on a standard set-up on sealed beams. Thank you in advance for advice.

I would use a multimeter and see if voltage is coming to the sealed beam lamps, if not work back to the stalk checking voltages.

If there is voltage you should be able to test the sealed unit, or power it and check. I once had a corroded connector to the sealed beam lamp.

If the sealed beam unit has failed, it would be an opportunity to fit a halogen conversion. Relays are a must with halogen headlights and are still worth doing even if you stick with sealed beam headlights. The easiest way to check for a failed sealed beam unit is to swap the left and right ones.

When the lights are on what happens when you pull the stalk to "flash"? If it stays the same ie just headlights on and no main, check the blue/white wires into the connectors under the rad and at the switch.

Thank you for the advice. main beam flash working fine. Looks like it's the stalk unit that needs replacing.

The indicator stalk is prone to burning out and causing the headlights to fail. This happens because the switchgear is carrying the full current of the headlight circuit. The best way to prevent this is to fit relays. It might be possible to repair the indicator stalk if you're very lucky.
