Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Thanks guys, unfortunately Burlens were out of stock of a few items I ordered, so I will have to wait till tomorrow.
I will change the fuel pipe into the float lid, however I intend to change one item at a time in order to know the cause.
Yes James, it apparently is a gold seal engine, shame it only done around 8k miles before the car got laid up.
The is some oil coming out of spark plug tube 1, only a few drops, still disheartening. But that will have to wait till I get the fuel leak and gearbox sorted.

Took the hose off this morning, ST had changed it so that seems fine, however I have ordered a new one with petrol clamps, as the jubilee clips they fitted look nice, but not very wide.
Burlens are out of stock of the complete service kits, so will order float valve kits separately today.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Spares still have not arrived, but I do have a new float and gasket.
Changed the float this morning before work, still leaking.
Changed the gasket, stopped leaking.
It seems that there is a thickness difference, which was raising the float height so as not to cut out supply.
I think ST put one of their own gaskets in, I'll only know when I empty the boot, as I did supply new ones.
Hard to see from the picture, but in hand its about double the height, will wait for the spares and change
the whole kits on both floats.
Next the water pump leak, if you have any shortcut tips, please let me know.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
There is no quick fix to a water pump leak sadly.
There is a wiki guide though.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Thanks Jon,
I read your guide yesterday, and will check the return pipe, but I suspect (hope) the gasket has perished.
Either way, I will have to remove all and just get on with it, I think its all gunked up around there.
Do you think I should put a water pump repair kit at the same time, or would you suggest new parts
throughout?
Also are there any other precautionary jobs worth doing, whilst it's all open, I might as well start ordering now.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
I have a feeling that my floats and valves have worn/aged, and the gasket thickness made a difference.
ST have used their own gaskets, the ones I supplied (rimmers) are in the boot, and are very thin, maybe
someone might test this to be 100%.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
I find with SU gaskets the quality is variable but the best ones come in SU or Burlen OE repair kits.
I tend to buy these when I see them on ebay, sadly less frequently as time passes.
Water pump repair kits are best obtained from Fitchetts, Robsport or Tony Hart the stag person.
There are other decent Stag folks that will also do them but I haven't used them.
Stag folks also do a full on ceramic insert for the impellor but so far I havent need to go there.

I have only ever gone to burlen for carb parts even if I have to wait.
Fitchetts for the water pump, that's where I got mine.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Received the float valve seat kit from Burlens, bul I'll be dammed if
I know why there are extra different gaskets in there?, are they for different versions of SU HS6?.
I only had the rimmers gaskets before so ST could test with until I got round to a full kit install and clean up, along with the club alloy mounts.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Thought I'd change the float, gasket and valve kit on the rear carb this morning.
Glad I did, after cleaning up and removing the brass valve, there was a big lump of rubber
inside over the opening. How the carb even functioned is beyond belief, its bigger than the opening.
The fuel pipe (float to metal link) from Burlens felt superior and so were the proper petrol clips,
so they got changed, I used the old pipe to replace the one on the overflow which was begining to
deteriorate.
Now have to do the pipe and clip for the front float, have to change it, quality difference and tight
fit is too much to ignore, 10 mins tomorrow.

While I was doing the rear float, I took a picture of the engine number, I think its probably going to fall
off, sooner or later. Any suggestions for what type of glue ?

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Ordered a waterpump rebuild kit, thermostat, gaskets etc from Robsport today.
Might as well change all the water hoses whilst I'm at it.
Are the silicone ones from Roose Motorsport with JSC clips worth having ?, or should I just stick it out with the standard ones.

Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.
Had to go shopping today, only got a hour of sunlight.
Removed the thermostat cover, only to find gasket seal all round the gasket, inside the cover, all round the thermostat, took a good 40 mins to clean it out and rub down the mating surfaces.
Removed the hoses and undone the radiator bolts, will remove in the morning for a flush through and a coat of paint.
