Triumph propshaft

#1 Post by Pearce »

Hi just changing my Toledo 1300 engine to a dolomite 1500 engine and gearbox and propshaft seems to be too long can I shorten my Toledo one or do indeed a dolomite one cheers Carl

Yes, because you've gone from the 3 rail Toledo box to the single rail Dolly box, you need a Dolly prop to suit.

I can only speak of dolomites here but I always thought the 3 rail and later single rail boxes
had identical dimensions...

Again I only know about overdrive versions....but the single rail and 3 rails share layshaft and mainshaft ( apart from tip size ) and bell housing. The major difference is in selectors only....

The sliding joint on a dolly prop accommodates the difference between overdrive and non overdrive too...

So I'm a bit surprised you are having this issue. Does your prop have a front sliding bit?

Jon, the 3 rail non OD is several (3 1/2) inches shorter than the single rail non-od. hence the issue here I reckon.
Change to OD and the gap closes right up. A 3 rail od is the same as as single rail non-OD. Single rail od is an inch longer than that. So the sliding joint would cope with that.

The gear lever comes out in a different place on the single rail box too, the Toledo tunnel will need its gear lever hole moving back 2-3" as well!

Steve

I have a 1500 non o/d prop you can have, if you are anywhere near the west midlands but the sliding joint is somewhat seized.
