Windscreen questions

#1 Post by MIG Wielder »

Two questions if anybody can help please....
1. Has anone tried this windscreen scratch polishing kit for getting rid of wiper blade scratches ?
Does it remove the tinting on a tinted and laminated screen in the process ? Or is the tinting on the inside surface ?
http://www.frost.co.uk/full-windscreen- ... r-kit.html

2. Any good ideas how to remove the years old sticky plastic residues from old tax-disc holders on the inside ? I've found that Iso-propyl alcohol ( a.k.a Computer solvent cleaner ) is good for still liquid glue but it doesn't work on the hard dried on stuff.
Thanks Tony.

I think you'll find the tint is intrinsic in the glass colour, I doubt it is surface applied.

Methylated Spirit usually shifts dried on glue, but white spirit, cellulose thinners and petrol are all potentials for acting as a solvent.

Failing that, a safety razor blade as a tool carefully used.

The plastic laminate is in the middle of two sheets of glass, the tint itself will actually be in the glass itself, as such, rather than a surface treatment like aftermarket tints. Professional valeters do window glass polishing, but that would mostly be for very minor light scratches and scuffs.

The product in the link seems a bit expensive to me, and of course depending on how bad it is, I've got away with jewellery polish/Brasso before, on a drill mounted pad.

Edit: Had this sitting on my screen and forgot to press post, sorry for repeating what you have said Alun. Oh, and http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-label- ... 00ml-n63an might help with the residue, oddly smells of oranges, also old fashioned lighter fluid works a treat too.

I have used it on my wind screen and it worked but the scratch was not very marked that I wished to remove.

That's quite cheap kit ,the stuff we use at work is crushed diamond paste and very expensive
And it still takes an age to get a scratch out , your prob better of getting a good second hand screen.

I used a kit on my sons Peugeot when the wiper scratched it with a wide arc. It took a lot of work and the glue eventually gave way due to heat build up on the Velcro pad but it did do the job quite well in the end. I could get the name from the garage but just found it on ebay.

I've got the kit here right now and I'll try it later. Thanks for all the useful and re-assuring comments, particularly about minimising the heat generated. That was one of the points made in the instruction leaflet as well.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Tony.

I used one of Frosts kits to remove quite a bad scratch on one of my side windows and found it very effective. Just take your time and keep wetting the pad.

Steve

On the assumption you are not trying to clone Triumph's :) and you just want to use some salvaged glass as a replacement, I think that etching will be too deep for this method.

No cloning going off here lol, its had a s/h door fitted before i got it with a previous reg on it, just thought it would save swapping the window.

Just a wiper scratch took me a fair amount of time Steve and I nearly knackered the polishing head. I suspect you could swap the glass quicker than getting rid of etching in the glass.
