Vin number problem.

#1 Post by Jimmymac »

Hi to all you dolomite owners.
I am currently working on a dolomite that is set to have a bit of the period racer look.
When I bought the car it had no v5 and no vin plate at the time I did not consider this to be a massive problem as i had the registration and the vin number is stamped in the lower rear screen boot panel.
I have recently looked at applying for a v5 for the vehicle only to realise I can not read the entire vin number.
Can anyone help me, is there an archive I would be very greatfull for any help.

Welcome to the forum.

You could be stuck on this one. You obviously have a later car if you have a VIN stamped on the body. Have you tried getting down to bare metal to get the complete VIN? You should be able to apply for the V5C if you have the VIN. Short of trawling through the Heritage build records, there's not much elese you can do. If you need to strip the paint off, try avoid any abrasive methods as they could obliterate the VIN.

If you knew the old reg maybe it may have belonged to a club member previously? I seem to recall giving car details when I registered for the club. Someone in club admin may know.

Since this looks like quite a late car with the VIN stamped at the back the first characters will be something like TWT xLD xxxxx . Now knowing the last few digits and the year of registration it would be possible to work out the first digits as the numbers of cars produced were fairly limited on 1979 / 80.
The 2nd route would be to contact the Membership Secretary who may be able to help from previous records.
If you don't mind posting the model / reg; / colour ; and reg; date here you may find a previous owner on here.
It sounds like a Sprint, if you are doing a period style racer.

Try having a look underneath the number from inside the boot..I can read my Vin quite clearly that way!

I've had copies of the old V5s and V55 application for registration docs from DVLA for a couple ot TR7 Sprints. All of these have the chassis/commisioning number on them, but I can't remember if you have to have the number, or just the reg, or if you have to be the keeper already.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

There were only 834 Sprints made with the later style chassis number; you could try a process of elimination...for instance, we know your car is not number 113504, so that leaves 833 possibilities...

PM me the reg, i'll stick it in our MOT system at work, and tell you the VIN number recorded - which is all DVLA will want in order to issue you a V5 anyway.....

Thank you all for your great advice.
The car is a sprint and when I picked it up it had no engine or gearbox I believe that they had been used in a toledo project.
I now have a sprint engine and overdrive gearbox, most of the welding is done I still have a few hours to do.
I hope to get the v5 sorted and that will give me a push to get on and finish the car as I really like the registration.
