Second half of last year, my 1850 started popping out of reverse gear.
Haven't used it for a while now as it's sorned for winter but we have driven it up and down the drive a bit. It does go back but "grumbles" a bit!
Was wondering what the possible causes might be.
Thanks
Jeff

Hmm.....

Anyhow, sorry to bring bad news, I think it is the overdrive unit.
On the older A type, if this slipping in reverse gear occurred, it was possible to adjust the overdrive setting
but alas I think that the J type is self adjusting, therefore this option doesn't exist.

Re: Reverse gear
I did have a problem where I could not select reverse in one of my 1500 gearboxes, which is basically the same as an 1850 and this was caused by the reverse operating lever pivot pin part DAM 1714 shearing.
My other suggestion is have you damaged the reverse idler gear and / or laygear by selecting reverse while still going forward as there is no synchomesh on the reverse gear. My wife had a habit of doing this.
If you have a spare drain plug or are prepared to drain the gearbox you could take out the magnetic drain plug out so see if it has any metal bits attached. This might provide some clues.
