Steering Rack

#1 Post by 73sprint »

Hi all, recently my sprint went for its mot. It failed on the steering rack. This was the rack that was put in 2 years ago because obviously the previous rack failed. My local friendly mechanic who took the car to the testing station explained that the rack has play from within the rack tube, he pulled the gaiter back and packed it out with grease. The car was retested and passed. The steering rack is actually quite bad and has definate play. Question is who does proper recon racks ?. I dont want to be doing this every few years, it seems the club have none at the moment ?. I cant remember where the rack came from.
Thanks in advance.

Provided the rack has not been bent it is not that difficult to repair a steering rack and most bits still seem to be available.

I suggest you read the posted responses to Sandowner posted Wedesday Nov 25, 2015 Titles "Who reconditions the vendors steering racks"

Here you go, I did my own. Starting half way down the page.

If you want to convert it to a quick rack speak to Mark at Jigsaw Racing, he can supply you with a new pinion which fits in place of the old one with no mods.

Oh and Chris Witor does the cups for the trackrods.

The Club do have stock, but limited, ie two.

When those have gone there are two more that I bought in from a stock clearance.
