An easy way of testing the "boot light theory" it is to disconnect the boot light or remove the bulb and seeing if the battery drains overnight.

Or, if you suspect the boot light being on when shut, put a mobile phone in the boot doing a
video recording of the bulb, close boot and check recording.

So, I've ordered an ammeter as I think these are good to have anyways. I don't have a light in the boot, so it can't be that.

I have had the battery drain all the way the past a couple of times by leaving a light on (classic) of which I understand can kill a battery. And, the car has not been driven for nearly two months whilst the rust was getting sorted. Would this have killed the battery?
no boot light!! :D

I take it you've eleminated the battery itself being at fault, by disconnecting it overnight and seeing that it does not still drain?

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.
