Thanks Tony but I wouldn't buy any oil filter with the cardboard ring on the top & bottom. Been there, blown the engine.

Yes but I'm always looking for a bargain. By the time you add postage it will be over a tenner.

Eurocarparts keep them for TR7 (Mann). Same I think?
£3.50 and local (possibly) free postage over a tenner. I got a few when they had their regular "buy oil get filter free" offer

In recent times I have bought them from Robsport and yes I agree that the cardboard rings need avoiding.
I even took one off an engine where the spring plate in the canister was missing not surprisingly the engines bearings were in poor condition.

Just had a look. I think it was just a one-off.

After a while the cardboard ring has been known to separate from the filter and clog up the oil way (which is what happened to me).

I've just looked out a couple of complete filter housings I have, NOS and factory supplied. Interestingly, both had AC filters with card rings...now in the bin! I thought the card rings was an aftermarket cheapening!

There are probably a few reasons for this, a) back in the day the service interval for the filter was 3000 miles, under those terms, the card ring and the glue holding it were probably adequate. b) the glue used in the 70s is probably considered too toxic/expensive for use today and has been replaced with something safer/cheaper. and c) the general deterioration of manufacturing standards and the proliferation of counterfeit goods these days.
Personally I find it hard to comprehend just HOW much faking goes on in the world, its not just perfume and watches, even aircraft spares are counterfeited and car parts like brake pads and other safety critical stuff are routinely faked in some parts of the world. I guess it's all part of the something for nothing mentality that seems so prevalent these days.

Hi all, I am resurrecting this thread as I was searching for info on 1850 fuel filter assembly. I carried out an oil change today and curiosity got the better of me as I decided to dismantle the whole assembly to clean it out. Unfortunately when i removed the spring retaining clnb on the central bolt I slipped (hands covered in old oil) and dropped the oil canister housing, spilling the contents. Now I am not sure I have all the pieces back in and fitted in the correct way. I have a plastic washer, followed by spring then metal washer then the fat thing with a spring inside it that the filter itself presses against and then the retaining clip.

Does anyone have an exploded view diagram of the filter assembly I can see to make sure I have all the aprts and it is all in the correct order?
