reshelling

#1 Post by cleverusername »

I have taken off the main bearing cap. Thrust washers in place yay. No bronze left, nay. However there is bronze showing the very bottom of the bearing shells. So how difficult are they to change?

Plus, how do you get to the front washer, the anti roll bars in the way?

Just push them out of the cap and push new ones in....
The one behind the crank you can push out with a suitable drift and then keep rotating the crank until the bearing drops out.
They have a locating tag, so you push from the opposite side. I use an old 25 thou feeler gauge as a pusher.

The front one can only be done with the engine out. IIRC. I just do the middle and back ones if I cant take out the engine.
If they are down to the copper you need to think about taking the engine out.

The thrust washers are both on the back bearing. There is no thrust washer on the front bearing cap, which as I said is all but impossible
to do with the engine in the car.

I have the thrusts switched, now at 5 thou end float.

What is the issue with the front bearing, access looks good when you get that cross piece out of the way.

Its been a while since I reshelled a dolly 1500 in situ. I may be thinking of Spitfires.

If you can get at it after removing the cross bit under the sump gasket then go for it.
