Clutch pedal just 1/2 travel

#1 Post by Galileo »

My procrastination over swapping out my original gearbox to put in an overdrive unit may have been resolved for me! Pressed down the clutch at a junction and it will only go down half way before it hits something solid, I actually thought something had rolled under the pedal. Managed to get the 30 miles home with speed/rev matching gear changes with only a couple of shouts of MOVE at school run cars!

Quick search on here brought up this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27315, which seems to be the same issue, though I haven't had a chance to get under yet as the light is fading quickly, I wondered if there is any other possible cause, that doesn't involve a gearbox and engine out job?!
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

How you approach this depends on a few things....
like how much kit and enthusiasm you have for diving underneath in the freezing.....

I'd maybe confirm the diagnosis and then wait for some warmth and then swing out engine and box together
or drop it all out on the subframe.

Best of luck, but I cant see it being pleasant news...

You know when you really know the answer already but you have this small grain of hope that you may be wrong? Well thanks Jonners for dispatching my grain of hope in such a nice way! :) I know what my mistake was, commenting to a friend I was giving a lift to at the weekend that the old thing was running really well at the minute, I think that might have put the kibosh on it.

Time to dig out the serious overhaul overalls it is then, I'm going in, I may be some time...
