Thought I got away with it, replaced rear and middle bearing no problems, then I got to the front.
When I got the shell off, the bearing shell had 3 grooves cut in it. So the crank is knackered.
So options are regrind, but since this requires engine removal option 2 is an engine change. Advice?

Re: Scored bearing 1500
Is the crank badly scored? as in will catch your nail as you run it over the journal? Or any other signs of damage?
If not a new bearing will be OK. Not perfect, and may only last 30k, but it will be better than previous.
Bear in mind the bearings are very soft, so a tiny bit of grot will score it very quickly, and may do minimal damage to the crank.
(I have done this several times on engines that have been fine for many many miles)
A pic of the crank journal and shells would help here....

I have added a photo of the damaged shell, difficult to see on image, my camera doesn't like to focus that close. There are grooves by the central channel.

Seems like a one time scrape. I think when you fit the new shells it will be ok.

Is that supposed to be damaged?
They are only bad when you can see the copper.
Fit new shells and forget about it.

It is difficult see on the photos, there is copper showing in grooves, like you use to get on a record.Jon Tilson wrote:Is that supposed to be damaged?

This is why you should never look at the front bearing, you don't know what you might find.
Anyway I am going to reshell and hope I get a few more miles out the engine before major surgery.
