Cannot really make it out but it could be a Kenlowe fan temperature switch ,you need to take a pic of the whole engine bay :) and welcome also :)

Sorry had to crop the image it was too big. It's next too the battery it has a small copper tube coming off it ( that goes nowhere you can see the end of it in the pic) and a wire that runs down and along the bottom of the rad. I haven't had time to trace it properly,mothers day and all that.

That fat bulb on the end of the small copper tube needs to be inside a coolant pipe really. Otherwise it's pretty much just ballast.
