... Just to confirm, if the rear brakes need adjusting, should the ratchet adjuster operate when the handbrake is pulled on ... or when it is released ? I've just been reading another forum for cars with Dolomite-type rear adjusters and the ratchet has been set to click up the adjustment when the handbrake is released.

No on ours it moves the ratchet wheel on the "on" stroke....
