SPRINT GEAR BOX OIL SEAL

hi there can anybody give me some advice on fitting the oil seal in the front cover on the sprint gear box.The old seal looks to be part of the cover it dos not look possible to prise it out, its resesed into the metal, there had been a oil leak but on dismantling I found that there was no gasket on the cover so thinking this was the reason for the leak, im not wanting to damage the cover trying to remove the seal. thanks kev

It does come out and is replaceable. The missing gasket may have been done on purpose to set the bearing preload so be careful about adding one.

hi there thanks tony, the one fitted is metal in the housing how do you prise it out? I have problems posting pictures but will try later to give a description thanks kev

You make have to cave it inwards a bit to get it moving but be careful to not leave a scar in the metal. Another way, if you have a pry bar with a bent end (like a bent screwdriver), you may be able to go at it through the tube end into the back of the seal and give it a thwack.

It needs a gasket. There is no preload as the bearings aren't tapered. Clearances are done by the layshaft thrust washers
in Triumph boxes.

What Tony said to get the seal out. You do need to change it and get a good quality one from a good supplier like Fitchetts.

Jon, I was talking about mainshaft clearance but dashing back and forth to computer whilst working I may not have said enough. On the "big" boxes the mainshaft bearing protrudes into the bell housing slightly and the front cover (with the seal) has a recess to accept the bearing. (i think).
I thought the clearance "could" be too big and allow the 1st motion (input for those not familiar ) shaft to walk out too far from the mainshaft, hence the shimming. Prepared to be wrong tho

I see what you mean. Inwards the bearing is held by the external circlip, outwards its the housing so the gasket does have
a part to play, but its pretty thin.....

Never been an issue for me.
