Water leakage. What do I buy?

#1 Post by cliftyhanger »

On my TR7 engine I have recently noticed some minor leakage around the water pump area....difficult to see exactly where though.
I want to fix this with one hit, so my thoughts are to buy (within reason!)
Water pump rebuild kit.
inlet manifold gaskets
O rings

Anything else I may need?
And any recommended suppliers?

Cheers

I very recently bought pattern 1850 inlet manifold gaskets from Robsport.
These are the same (blue coloured) as Rimmers sold me a few years ago.
They are a pretty good fit but the LH gasket's mounting holes and the RH gasket top right hole
all need a little enlarging.

Why not use the single TR7 inlet manifold gasket though, Clive?

I have a box of assorted Imperial sized O-rings, one of these does the inlet manifold, so I can't make a recommendation for a supplier.

Further to your list you will need a set of pump cover gaskets
and probably a bush for supporting the water pump shaft within the block.
If you don't know if you have a later O-ring equipped by-pass pipe it may be sensible to get one (c/w O-rings).

If the leak is showing around the water pump cover then that isn't the pump that is faulty.
Possibilities include the by-pass pipe, water pump cover gasket, water pump bolts (these need hylomar on their threads to seal),
inlet manifold O-ring (and on an 1850 the RH gasket) and the thermostat housing gasket.
When driving the coolant will be pushed and spread by the air flow.....making it hard to pinpoint the source of the leak,
does coolant gather in the big core plug below the carbs?

If the pump is leaking wetness will be visible on the block behind the alternator.

Under these circumstances,
I would also rebuild/replace the pump while I was at it, for piece of mind.

Thank you for the reply. Having poked about and got a torch out, I think it is the bypass tube.
However, I will get a pump kit just in case.....

I don't think I need any more water pumps though. Sorry.
