Rear axle tie bar mount - disintegration!

#1 Post by BDN712V »

Afternoon! Just after a bit of advice as to my rear axle... The tie bar mount on one side of the axle has disintegrated so that the tie bar (and bushes) just float. Currently I'm planning on removing the rear axle on Wednesday and fabricating a new mount for it... however, I may be tempted to weld it back up as there is very little loss in thickness and a fairly clean break all the way round - fatigue?

Any suggestions / similar occurrences / advice?

From my own expierience you will end up one wheel jammed in the arch and the other one sticking outside the body.

Driving it in that condition (carefully, slowly, etc.) had the inside of the tyre polishing the wheelarches on either side - the axle seemed to 'float' side-to-side.

So these are the choices....
Leaky axle that liberally sprays everything in the area....
Or this....
I'll go with the leaks....

Or...That's teach you to fit polybushes....

I had exactly that happen on my very early 1850 many years ago. A local welding expert re-welded it just like new. And that was on a New Year's eve I remember. I actually drove it to the welding place very carefully. Somewhere I have a pair of good axle mounts I cut off an old 1850 axle before I scrapped it. Are 1850 axle mounts the same as Sprint ones ? I think you have a Sprint. Let me know if they are any use to you.

Mine is a (late) 1500HL. I'm taking the axle off today and having a proper look. I can then either weld it up or fabricate a new mount. I'm leaning more towards fabricating a new one the way it has broken.

We'll see what the other side looks like at the same time!

New piece fabricated, everything reassembled and test run. So far, so good! However, will be on the lookout for a replacement rear axle for a late 1500HL (manual). Preferably with both tie bar mounts in good condition!
