When you put a Sprint engine back together , there is a mark on the flywheel and on the adaptor metal plate that bolts to the cylinder block ( at 12 o'clock position )
I know these should line up , but what position should the crankshaft be in ?
Many thanks
Simon

Re: Sprint engine , lining up flywheel to crankshaft info
If memory serves me right, the flywheel I think it will fit in any position although some flywheels I have seen only have seven bolt holes, so can only go on in one position.
The adaptor plate should have 2 steel dowel pins to locate, also there is a cut out in the adaptor plate which be level with the sump face and the hole positions will only line up one way as well.

I would put 1 and 4 at tdc and if the flywheel marks line up with the plate mark that would do.

The marks should line up when no.1 piston is at TDC.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years.
... Still Sprintless.
Engines, Gearboxes, Overdrives etc. rebuilt. PM me.

Re: Sprint engine , lining up flywheel to crankshaft info
Ive found that on most slants the scribed lines on adaptor plates and flywheel notches are pretty rough guides only...like within 10 degrees.
You can find TDC on no1 with a dial gauge and measure it for yourself...thats the one where you want the marks on the timing cover right and crank pulley, and they are usually
within a degree...

Many thanks for the replies
I think it's something to do with crank / flywheel being balanced together ....

Simon, I thought I was chatting with Tony G about this.
Tony, correct me if I'm wrong but did you advise that I set the timing to tdc using the dial gauge then put the front cover on followed by the timing marks and align them properly before removing the timing cover without touching the timing marks thus setting everything perfectly?

I think so James
. Front cover could stay on though. Just adjust the timing pointer if needed after real TDc has been found with a dial guage.
