1500 blower motor issues

#1 Post by alangraham »

I had occasion to remove the blower motor on my 1980 Dolomite 1500HL today, the resistor coil having parted company with it and hanging underneath. With the unit detached, refixing the coil was straightforward enough but two issues arose, firstly a piece of the green spring steel clip attaching the manual control cable sheath to the blower unit snapped at its end, and the remains of the sponge gasket between the blower and the bulkhead simply fell away in a pile of dust.
Using a 1973 edition of the Leyland parts catalogue, I think I've identified the clip as part no 520250 - in which case Rimmers can help me. However the foam gasket presents a more difficult challenge and I wondered whether anyone could offer any solutions if they've encountered the same problems. I've got some 3 photos but wasn't able to attach them, if anyone can do this for me I would be grateful and can email them over; my pensioner I.T skills weren't up to it.
Thanks,
Alan. North Yorks.

Alan,
I used closed cell foam and cut it to size, worked a treat. Closed cell of course won't hold any moisture. I also used it for the washer bottle bracket. I just used some from old packaging.
I wish I had used it in the door frames, I threw away the old foam, what use was it and it would attract moisture? Well it stops metal thingies clanking together when you shut the door, or drive on poor surfaces.

I've had an offer to attach the pictures so hopefully coming shortly. Hadn't heard of closed cell foam so looked it up on the internet - commonly available; what thickness would be correct?

Dunno about thickness - thick enough to seal when squashed tightly. :)

I can find you a 520250 if you haven't ordered one yet...?

Thanks Alun but I have already ordered one plus a spare. It's the gasket that I'm scratching my head over; when I get that sorted everything can go back together. I tried Winns, Canleys and Rimmers so it is starting to look like a home made solution.

Don't know if this helps at all but the TR4 - 6 heater blower assembly is sealed to the heater assembly in a similar way. Don't have a TR6 these days to check if the dimensions and structure are the same or similar :(
Rimmers show this item as NLA, but the Roadster Factory in the USA list it as available. I have dealt with them in the past and they are very helpful. The Triumph part number is 812301S, the Roadster Factory have their own crazy part numbering system and list it as SLP177. Their version seems to come as a strip to wrap around the blower assembly.
See http://www.74tr6.com/heater.htm for a desription of a TR6 heater overhaul with lots of photos, many of which look similar to Dolly components.
Hope this helps!

In the end - and in the interests of getting back on the road ASAP again, I used some foam I had lying around. With that, and the new clips I got from Rimmers, it all went back together very sweetly and with a bit of improved cable alignment (the original clip had been fitted upside down) it now all works better too. I painted it up while it was off the car and fitted some original Smiths stickers (from Ebay) so it really looks the part as well.
