Troubleshooting a knocking engine

#1 Post by Dumbledorbin »

Hi all. My engine is knocking. Doesnt sound like bottom end. I replaced cam followers on the weekend and they were indeed very stiff and stuck. However got it all abck up and running and its still knocking. If i take the piston 4 pushrods out the knocking stops completely. Any ideas what it could be? Worn cam? Rocker arm?

1500 or 1300, Knock or tap, dull or bright sounding?
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

OHV's do suffer rocket shaft wear and if the noise goes with the pushrods out then that really points to that.

Is there a way of checking it for rocker shaft wear? or am i best off just replacing the rocker shaft to find out?

Took the head off. Looks like piston 4 is hitting the cylinder head. So possible small end or crack in the piston? Either way the engines coming out. I have 4 pistons lying around here. How do i know if they are the correct size? Is it the number stamped G? The ones in the block are all stamped G have a long number of 213719 and underneath that it says t25.

The ones i have lying around are the same but underneath the long number it says s44.

Will these fit?

The long number is the part number and the G is the size so if they're the same they should fit as well as the old one.

Be sure to check the gudgeon pin fit in the small end bush in the conrod, if there is play here you will still have the same problem on re-assembly.
