Petrol tank question(s)

#1 Post by tony g »

Hi I bought a dolly tank recently which is quite nice inside, however the sender unit is a 2 wire one so I assume its from a non fuel light model (pre hl maybe). Also the tank "swirl pot" is not there inside. Were "lesser" models fitted with a more basic tank?

Cheers

Two part numbers in my '76 Dolomite range catalogue: 312385 general and RKC3037 for Australian export models...but then there is only one part number for the sender 215468 with three terminals depicted. My '73 parts catalogue for the Sprint has the same 312385 part number for the tank, but 215652 for the sender, again depicted with three terminals! Same story in the '75 Sprint catalogue, save for an additional tank number 312387 for LHD...

The '76 Onwards range catalogue however has RKC3480 for 1300 and 1500 with PKC505 for HL and Sprint tanks.

215468 defined as the sender for 1300 and 1500, 215652 for HL and Sprint. So, did early Sprints only have a two terminal sender? I don't think so as they had a fuel level warning light...

5 different tank part numbers in total! Who knew?

As you'll not be wanting my tank would you like the sender unit from it?

Cheers Alun that would suggest the later cars had a choice of tanks for non warning light or those with a light.

Marko, thanks but Im ok for the correct sender just now.

Hi Tony , Just as a weird theory are both the terminals insulated from the metal work of the sender unit case ?
If so I wonder if this sender unit is off a slightly different early car where instead of the 3rd earth terminal the intention was to provide the earth via the casing, through the metal work of the tank and then down to chassis ground through the fixing bolts.
If so this would indicate that the idea didn't work too well and the later units were fitted with the proper 3rd earth terminal.

Some pattern tanks didn't have the swirl part in them. Maybe the sender is also aftermarket.

Or if my sender would go bad and I had a few smiths ones in the shed and did find one that after a little bending did fit and I didn't care about a warning light I maybe would fit that one. Just to have a working gauge again.

That's also a possibility regarding pattern tanks
