Recommendations for Sprint alloy refurb?

#1 Post by Galileo »

Went to see the local wheel refurbers Wheel Genie in Huntingdon to get a quote but ended up being turned away in the nicest possible way. Smashing bloke up there, really helpful and we had a long chat about the British car industry, but he was not keen on touching my wheels, saying that his diamond cutting kit would just chew up something that old. Personally I think that's to his credit, he was very honest about what he could or could not do, even had a look at my mint spare. Had a chat about the colour, he was uncertain that the lacquer had just yellowed with age, saying it looked far too even for that and thought that the lacquer had a tint applied, not that I want to reopen that tin of worms!

He recommended I asked around for a specialist, and I thought I know just the place to get that kind of advice!
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

Thanks for the suggestions, really useful and those pictures of what they can look like Simon.

Are they lacquered at all? I'm thinking I might need that doing, as otherwise brake dust is just going to ruin them again in no time as my car is quite well used.

No lacquer on them , they told me to just use a good wax on the alloys , only had mine done as they are 1972 and 1973 rims

Or why not just buy Simon's spare set that he has on f/b. They look great but shipping from Jersey may be a thing...

I agree Lepsons and they have branches in various locations. Heres what they did with mine.

They do indeed! Just sent off for a quote from them, had one back at £288 from the Wheel Specialists.

Edit: Had a quote back from Lepsoms of £408, very nice lady and I felt very confident in their abilities but I must confess the cost is more than a little eye watering.
