What tyres do you use?

For everything to do with Dolomites, Toledos, FWD cars and Dolomite-based kitcars.

What tyres do you use?

#1 Post by Aleco »

As part of my dolly recommissioning I'm need to replace my tyres.

I'm a bit of a tyre geek and think that the way a tyre looks can really set the looks of a car right off. I like a sporty more 'modern' look. I guess I would call it more square edged than the rounded classic tyre.

The amount of tyres out there isn't huge and I'm struggling to find tyres that look as I want them too. I would like to use 185/60/13 but will consider the factory size or other sizes on recommendation.

I have found these and fell in love but the only size is 185/55/13. I'm not sure if the car will be a bit harsh with these for normal fast road use. They are Avon ZZS's and are about £100 each. I think they would look awesome!

I've also found these : Falken Ziex ZE 914 ecorun. I think they look good - sporty but not extreme and are quite a bit cheaper at about £55.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks

Dolomites are designed for a 85 or 70 profile, so use 175 or 185 70's on the Sprint wheel or 155 or 165 on the standard steels.

You can use 185 60s on Sprint wheels and some do. It drops the gearing slightly, meaning you do more revs for a given speed, and it means
your speedo won't be quite right.

Minty lamb web site has a gearing and size calculator.

Go for 14 or 15 inch wheels and you have a lot more options. Then you have to find the right wheel for the dolly PCD and offset.

I don't want to go down the different wheel route. I feel that a key feature of the sprint is it's unique wheels

I have those Falkens on my zetec spitfire. They are really rather good, in the wet as well as dry and are progressive and predictable.

Look about for prices online, there are some good deals available including local fitting.

Hi, I have just fitted a set of GoodYear Vector 4 seasons - 175/70 13s which cost me £46 a tyre delivered. I think they look good. I cant comment on how good they are yet as car is not road legal at moment but write up seems good. One thing to bear in mind is that they are rotational tyres so a spare needs to be non rotational so it can go either side.
I was unable to copy & paste a picture so here is a link to more info

regards
Chris

Toyo's all the way for me, they made my Golf GTi stick like glue to the Nürburgring circuit, and nice stiff sidewalls are perfect for low Sprint tyre pressures.

Okay, so the R888R are a little bit trackday, but when I get my wheels refurbed my tyre of choice will probably be 185/60 R13 80H Toyo Proxes CF2, I've got some Federal Super Steel 657 dodgy things on there at the moment that roar that loudly that even Androclus would have said 'sod getting that splinter out', and the sidewalls are very soft and give an occasional hint of rubbing on the arch.

Minty Lamb tyre thing doesn't work anymore, but there are plenty of alternatives.

Edit: Said Falken when I meant Federal.

I know what the op means about the tyres really setting off the car's appearance. A few years ago I had a TR6 restored. Part of the restoration included putting the car back on original & expensive Michelin XAS tyres. I saw it at the Triumph marque day this year, the original spec tyres replaced with awful looking Toyo Proxes - it's not an MG TF for heaven's sake.
I recall that Dolomites originally were supplied with Dunlop SP Sports, not all that long lasting, but they looked right. Sadly no longer available.

Falken Sincera sn832 Ecoruns 175/70/13 on standard steel wheels at the manufacturer's recommended pressures of 26psi all round.
I don't care what they look like, they work! :D

Hi Tony,
Any chance of a gratuitous wheel picture or two?

That's awesome. Cheers Tony.

My car is the exact same colour so it's like seeing exactly what mine will look like!

I think my mind has been made up.

Yours looks like it's been lowered, how much have you dropped it by?
