Timing chain or belt

#1 Post by Valkyrie2013uk »

Excuse my laziness, just purchased but haven't collected a 1980 Dolomite 1850HL. Can someone tell me if it's a belt or chain engine.

The whole Dolomite range had chains.

Another 1850 ! Good choice. The timing chains on these are quite long lived (~ 75,000 miles ) and can be replaced in a morning if needed. Have you got any photos of your new purchase you can put up please ?

As was mentioned somewhere on face book recently, only 64 1850 HLs on the road now, so well done.

I also fiddled about with the timing chain on my sprint this weekend, it is straight forward, getting the rad out requires a certain technique, have a read of the book a few times before starting.

good luck.

Wow that's a terrible survival rate given they made so many.

Doesn't have the halo factor of the Sprint or the cheap common parts of the 1300/1500.

Shame, because I would have preferred one to the 1500 in hindsight, a useful boost in power. The only nasties I have heard about is the jackshaft going, and the head welding itself to the block.

Well done for choosing an 1850HL. I think they are so underrated. A useful power increase over the ohv engines and identical to the Sprints inside.

Mine was one of the best cars Ive ever owned, strange how its never been taxed since I sold it, on the road, in 1993.
