Is it legal to sell a V5 and plates?

For everything to do with Dolomites, Toledos, FWD cars and Dolomite-based kitcars.

#1 Post by bazyerma »

HI,

Maybe a stupid question but can you really sell Number plates, commisioning plates and V5 on eBay?

I don't know about the legality of selling them as 'ephemera', they would perhaps make a framed wall decoration in a car themed pub perhaps, but it would certainly be illegal for any new owner to use them to attempt to pass off the identity of another road going car as that one!

I thought it would be handy if you had an 1980s car and wanted free tax!

TC production ceased in '76, so nearly all, if not all are already 'tax free'.

At very least, they'd be committing fraud.

Converting a Dolomite 1500 into a 1500TC would probably not be noticed by most people (outside of the club!)... Very dodgy!

Its kind of like selling a car but without the rust and badly damaged interior :)

I bet if that was a MK 1 Lotus Cortina ID it would be snapped up in minutes. Not saying its right or wrong but not much different to a reshell

Quite illegal, even as ephemera.
Notification of destruction or permanent export of a vehicle
17. Where a vehicle is destroyed or sent permanently out of—

(a)Great Britain; or
(b)Northern Ireland,

the registered keeper shall immediately notify the Secretary of State of the fact and, at the same time, surrender the registration document to him.
Not sure what you do when the secretary of state is a woman though?!
