Leaking water pump Sprint

#1 Post by Keith CANSDALE »

My pump is leaking coolant out of the slot on the block. I had the seals replaced only 18 months ago. Should I replace the whole pump or the seals and the impeller only? Thanks KC

When you replaced the seals did you machine the underside of the impellor? Also it is quite easy to damage the seal when re-assembling. If it's just a leak I would strip it down and inspect the pump before condemning it, they are both rare and expensive.

Just a thought, I done my water pump over four times, and still had a leak from the slot.

The thermostat housing had a blockage on the small pipe to the expansion tank.

Another point to remember is that if the car has been laid up for a while it's not uncommon for the pump to leak from the slot but then stop after some use as the seal beds in again :)

I did my pump a while ago, and fitted the seal kit with the addition of a ceramic ring for the seal to run on. Actually quite simple, just need a lathe to remove a little metal and then glue (yep, supplier suggested silicon rtv) the ring in place. No leaks, and no reason to suspect it will be an issue for a very long time....
