Front lights.......

#1 Post by georgethompson730 »

Information required on the front lights please......In preparation to fit a new front lighting loom from Jerone, I thought it might be worth getting the old set up working first. Doing this would prove the system and hopefully make getting the new one working a simple replacement of the original.
Since it's been a while since I've seen my lights working can someone confirm what lights should come on and when, depending on switch position, to help you out this is what I currently get, which I don't think is right.
Switch to sidelight.........Sidelight (next to indicator) only.
Switch to dipped...........Sidelight as above and all four sealed beam units on, should this be just the outers?
Switch to Main beam....Sidelight as above all four sealed beams flash(or at least brighten a bit) this is clearly wrong.

When on main beam the inners should come on but the outers should also brighten using the second filimant. I'm taking as read that the three pin wiring should be on the outside. Beyond confirming what I already think should be happening, what's going on with my lights???? Thank you.

The switch to dipped should be just the side lights next to the indicators and the outer sealed beams only :D , all the rest is correct.

Sounds like the inners have a 3 pin plug wired in too. Should only be 2 pin plug for main only. Is there a wire going from the outers from the top pin to the inners (if they indeed do have 3 pins)?

Thanks for the replies. The inners only have the two pin connector on them, totaly standard, never messed with, so these should only come on with main beam. Forgot to mention , sorry, when on dipped beam I also have the main beam cluster light on, if I'm on side lights only the cluster light is of but will come on if I flash the lights. I have now removed the inners and it still all works, not withstanding the cluster light is on and there seems to be no discernable difference when flashing the outers only. Should there be? what are the different wattage of the outer lights? Why would the cluster main beam light be on when dipped, stalk issues?

Probably the stalk. If you disconnect the four connectors of all lamp looms under de radiator and the warning light is still on in both positions it is the stalk.

Hi Jerome, thanks for that, I disconnected all the sealed beams, inner and outers, and the cluster main beam light works when it should in all switch configurations, so I guess my stalk is OK, which is great news as I wouldn't want to use the spare.......Because then I wouldn't have a spare.

Then the ground of one of the outer lamps was not good and that lamp was grounded through the main beam filament making the control light glow also. Soon a problem of the past.

So you think just go ahead and fit your nice new shiny loom, and that will sort any current earth issues during the fitting process. Thanks for the help, will have a look at the earth's tomorrow, as it would be nice to know it's working before I go for the loom change, won't be spending long on it, as I had planned to have e the new one fitted this week. One way or the other.

It has it's own ground wire for all the lamps that goes under the battery ground wire bolt on the inner wing. Your switch is only activating the relais with the new loom. If the switch is working ok then the new loom will also.
