CW9129 Framed Print

#1 Post by soe8m »

What's the story behind the framed print ptno. CW9129 on Chris Witors advertising space in the Dolly Mixture? It is the Dutch LHD Abingdon build Sprint during the 1975 RAC Rally but anyone knows why using that particular Dutch Dolomite in RHD UK land?

Maybe it was preferred to have LHD by the driver. Colin McCrae preferred LHD in the Subaru. Also some countries made it difficult for RHD cars to be homologated in RHD, not sure if thats the case?

It is a LHD Dutch car, owned by Britisch Leyland NL and had a Dutch driver and did i believe one overseas rally, this 1975 RAC. All the other events were here in NL, BE and D.
Typical the print does not contain one of the five UK works dolomite rally cars.

Sorry are you questioning why Chris is using that picture and not why it was a LHD car in the UK? :)

Chris was friendly with the owner in the 1980s and drove the car himself during a visit to the Netherlands.
An article about this was featured in a T2000 Register magazine at the time. Chris was very impressed with the car :D .

Is there a copy of that article?

I know when fia rules changed in 1976 this Dutch gp2 could not be ralllied oficially anymore and by the same rule the works gp2 in the UK were replaced by gp1 cars. It rallied on in in Belgium a few years and was bought by a Dutch Triumph parts supplier in the early eighties. That would be the man Chris Witor did visit probably. I know that before it went to Belgium BL NL did take out the Don Moore engine and replaced it by a "normal" sprint engine. Chris Witor didn't drive the car with it's original engine.

If anyone has a copy of this article I would like to read it.
