When will my dolomite become tax exempt? first registered 23/3/1976

At the latest, it should be elegible for historic status as of April 1st this year (2017) If it was built in 75 and not registered till 76 (which is possible, but only a heritage cert will confirm it) then it's already elegible.
But given there's only a couple of months more to wait for the certainty, it's probably not worth investing £40+ on a heritage cert with what is likely only a 10% chance of saving you those 2 extra months.

The cutoff date for 75 cars is a DOFR before 1/1/76 (or build date if you can prove it) These cars became historic class on 1/4/2016 Until April 1st, these are the newest cars that can currently be registered as Historic. Since the date is now OFFICIALLY a rolling one (it wasn't for the first 3 years, just an annual update) dates for your car should be on DVLAs website but they haven't updated it to reflect the change yet, it's only been about 18 months!

Note the 4 month gap between elegibilty through being 40 years old and actual time you get the status. You don't get the free tax when the car is 40 years old, you get it 3 months into the year AFTER it is 40 years old!

But it's DVLA we are discussing here, you weren't expecting logic or common sense were you?
