Suitable engine oil grades for the Sprint engine.
Re: Suitable engine oil grades for the Sprint engine.
I know I'm preaching to the converted but the important thing is to change it regularly.

The millers is better by a fair stretch.
Certainly oil pressure was held better (approx 10psi more after 20 mins) with my old 1500 on track compared to the VR1, but I don't think the slant engines give the oil such a hard time.

Whilst at uni one of my lecturers got very animated about lubrication and oils - She is a Tribologist so it goes with the territory!
Anyway, her view was that filtration was key. Even modern oils loose a lot of their key properties relatively soon into their life, but will continue to be effective lubricants if kept clean
Debris is the killer of machinery rather than oil spec. She changed the oil filter twice as often as the oil. So for a 10k oil service, she changed the filter every 5k.
Made sense to me anyway!

Way back in the early 1930s, Castrol undertook an experiment to prove exactly this. They got a new Tiger Moth aeroplane and didn't change the oil, only the filter for I don't know how many years and many thousands of flying hours. The experiment ended at the outbreak of WWII when the plane was drafted for pilot instruction but is still flying today, i've seen it and heard it's history.Aleco wrote:Whilst at uni one of my lecturers got very animated about lubrication and oils - She is a Tribologist so it goes with the territory!

My corolla still has the same oil filter fitted when I bought it 160.000km ago. Only adding oil once a while. I think the oil is refreshed by adding about every 10.000 km.

But old filters do not filter less.Well, as the filter "holes" slowly clog, less oil will pass through, but they will not let any larger particles through. In fact, as the holes clog, the filter probably becomes finer. Right up to the point where it does clog, and the bypass valve opens!
And trust me, if the car gets thrashed, cheap oil will give up and the engine will die. I have several T shirts, but have learnt my lesson now. Cost a few quid along the way.....

This takes me back to my original answer.
You pays your money you takes your choice.
Every one has a different view based on varying quantities and quality of science and research.
Ps : That's not me saying might is right.

Just re read my post. Apologies if it comes across as grumpy, I didn't mean it to.

I also meant to say that, yes a used filter will in theory filter'better' assuming it does not get breached and pass dirty oil through it.
As you say the by pass valve will lift - However you have no idea when this has happened, unless you fit a lot of telemetry!
So you may have spent ????km with no effect oil filter as it is so dirty the by pass is always open.
