Registering for historic road tax

Hello All,
Can the club help with providing build dates for our cars?
There was me thinking sorting out historic road tax with the DVLA would be simple!
I only have a registration date for my car - Dec 1973. Apparently that's not good enough for the DVLA they need build date - I did point out that it couldn't have been registered before it was built and that I was 3 years within the cut off date for free road tax - Computer said No!

Can anyone help me please.

You will need:
• A Vehicle registration certificate (V5C) – this must clearly show that the vehicle was made or first
registered before 1 January 1976. If you do not have a V5C, or if you think the age shown is incorrect,
you will need to produce an extract from the manufacturer/factory record or an extract from the
appropriate ‘Glasses Check Book’. Dating certificates from a vehicle enthusiasts’ club are not
acceptable to change the date of manufacture for an already registered vehicle.
(If the V5C indicates that the vehicle was registered from 1 January 1976 up to and including 7 January 1976, we will let you
register it as a historic vehicle, based on the assumption that the vehicle would have been made in the previous year).

Do you think I've been given a bum steer by the DVLA then?
If I've read that extract correctly, all I need is a registration date and not a build date.

The V5 should be enough, you are well in the tax exempt zone, my car was registered 31st December 1973 and built on the 18th October 1973. Failing that you can purchase a build certificate from Gaydon (not sure of the price) DVLA will except that.

Do it at a Post Office that does car tax BUT use the following posts by me on this thread and print them out - the PO Counter Staff don't get these requests every day, so it may be new to them, the prompts should help them find the right screens.

If your V5 states that it was first registered before January 1976 then it's a simple process. I wandered into Sandy Post Office armed with my V5, MOT and insurance policy, expecting a discussion to be had, but it was all business as usual and done in seconds, updated V5 returned by DVLA a week later.

Basically YES! The DVLA have again (unsurprisingly) given you a bum steer! It is a sad fact that 90% of the telephone staff there don't know their a*se from their elbow!

Has your car been off the road for a long time? Only asking since it has been entitled to free VED for 3 years already!

Thanks for all the responses : I'll go armed with all the info to the post office, hopefully I should get it sorted.

Carledo : Yes the car has been having another rest after the clutch hose split.
This time I bit the bullet and paid someone to get everything sorted for meeting for me.
Hopefully back on the road next week!

All sorted! I was in and out of the post office in 5 minutes, I was expecting a battle but it couldn't have been easier, I didn't even need the V10 form even though I had it ready.
The lady behind the counter even took my updated V5 and posted it to the DVLA for me.

The post office can be good and efficient!

My exact same experience, even down to not needing the V10 that I had dutifully downloaded, filled in and printed off. Good to hear that yours went just as smoothly. The only annoying thing is having to get it done every year, but a small price to pay for not having to pay the large price!

Once the car is registered as Historic you can renew online annually, it takes only a minute or two and still costs nothing!
