rear axle inner seal - substitute with #141756 gearbox seal - SOURCE?

Hi.

I think I'll be buying this alternate seal and revisiting the previous work. Can anyone recommend a source for this seal? Prior observations seemed to be that sometimes the seals from bulk suppliers leave a little to be desired.

I had a google. Fitchetts don't seem to have it. Robsport Triumph do. So do Rimmers of course, DMG, Hawkswood Classic NZ, Canleys and Racetorations.

Can anyone make any recommendations? I really don't want to have to do this a second time but for sure I'd like to make sure I get a decent product to eliminate the risk of then having to attend to it later for a third time !!

Most of the seals now available are the all black type spring seal whereas some of the earlier OE seals were metal ringed with a rubber type middle, this is the bit that fails. You can use the gearbox seal (part number XX) but these are really just a larger version of the standard seal and I can't see these offer any advantage. I've not had any problems with leaks with the non-metal type seal over the years.

If you have the old one go to Transeals in Welshpool with it. They explained to me that if it's just the area where the lip runs is damaged they can source a different manufacturer as some put the lip in slightly different locations so you can offset where the seal has worn eith the new one without having to sleeve.

Well I went through the process of replacing the inner and outer seals a while back since which it's done very few miles due to other issues.

Nevertheless the axle is very slowly weeping oil. Advice prior was that seals sourced from a certain popular supplier are cheap and cheerful and I should seek OE Payen NOS product. Given that pulling the halfshafts out is kinda a pain I'd like to maximise the chance of success.

Using the gearbox seal has also been recommended.

So I'm asking whether anyone can recommend the best source for this or any other seals given Rimmers seals seemed to be frowned upon (and it has to be said, certainly not been effective in my case)

I did seals on my 1850 n/s last year and bought them from Canley Classics.

When my handbrake stopped working due to my nicely oiled brakes, I went with the recommended on here gearbox nose seal straight away. It was a nice snug fit but not overly so, and though I've only done 600 miles on it so far there is not a hint of a greased brake shoe so far.

Triumph 141756 is a really common part used by many a manufacturer from AMC to Vickers - codes are SKF 12456, Payen NA299 (C461) etc. I bought mine from a supplier up the road from me http://www.oilsealuk.co.uk/ (on ebay as well), If I remember right they supplied an NAK NA299 (Taiwanese company). You can get a SKF one if you like brands i.e. www.simplybearings.co.uk

If you have a Ford dealer nearby, ask them for a diff seal for a 1966 Bronco, same thing!

Tempted by known brand SKF albeit still gearbox seal of course. On the other hand specialist bespoke axle seal has to be a good option. Although noting over 2x the price.

Any final opinions? Can anyone specifically vouch for either?

I fitted front gearbox oil seals to the axle of my track Sprint over ten years ago and they are still fine. Bought from Rimmers. The standard seals are fine for normal driving but would soon start leaking after a trackday or two.

I feel more like going for the front gearbox seals. Just the question of the best source.

Fitchetts DO supply this seal, I've bought them from them! But their website is pants, it's much better to phone them! They do Sprint engine mounts too!

I use the gearbox seal from Rimmers and have never had a problem with any of my Sprint axles.
