Sprint horn mountings and alloy wheel nuts.

#1 Post by Slowmo »

Hello all, new member here.
Recently bought a 1978 Sprint, Inca yellow, and joined the club. I have a couple of queries.

Firstly I have just removed a set of non-working air horns from the inner wing. I have bought a pair of new horns, similar to originals. However, all I have is the mounting plate jutting out from the radiator with two holes. I don't know how to mount the two horns on to this plate, and I can't find a picture in my manual or online. Can anyone tell me what bracket or brackets I need please? Alternatively can anyone take a picture of theirs please?

Also two of my alloy wheel nuts are stripped, probably an enthusiastic wheel gun. It seems they are very scarce. Has anyone used helicoils in these, and was it a success?

Thank you,
Peter.

At 1978 your Sprint should have the later 7/16 UNF wheel nuts. These are not so hard to come by and I would be happy to send you a couple for postage cost. Helicoiling would not be a good idea, 1) they are ally and quite soft and 2) not on such a safety related item.

The original horn brackets came as part of the horns, so says my parts book! But I have several "duff" horns in my boxes of bits, it probably wouldn't be TOO much trouble to check if the brackets will unbolt.

Steve, thanks for the info. The nuts are definitely 3/8 UNF alloy. Some parts on the car are from different vintages, so don't know how it's got earlier hubs. Reg, body, build number and engine etc. check out from original 1978.

Thanks for your offer of brackets. I am happy to make up brackets if I know what they look like. I must visit shows or somewhere where I can see the brackets first hand!

Peter.

I had j few stripped nuts on mine when I got it. Steel ones are available but I found it cheaper to buy a set of locking nuts from rimmers, not sure low much they are now though.
