Sump plug.
Sump plug.
Spent all day today doing bits and bobs, sorting a few issues, all was good.
Then noticed the sump plug was completely sheared - and I mean gone !
Any ideas before I take the sump off ?
Thanks,
Daz

Re: Sump plug.
You could try one of those sockets which digs in when you turn and are designed to remove rounded off heads. I forget the size of the sump plug so not sure if they are available on the correct size.

Re: Sump plug.
Good grief ! That is going some to shear off that square section. If there is anything left I'd try a stillson wrench on the remains of it, failing which I'd see if you can get a hex nut welded on the end and try turning that. Come to think of it, its not the whole of the insert in the sump that has come away is it ? That is normally only brazed in and the sump plug screws in that.
Good luck sorting it.

Re: Sump plug.
I there is anything left sticking out, you could file the sides to and see if a
smaller socket will fit.
smaller socket will fit.

Re: Sump plug.
I'd try an easy out. Be careful not to damage the thread in the sump as its tapered.

Re: Sump plug.
Not sure what access is like to the sump plug, but if you have a MIG, you could weld a thick washer onto the remains and then weld a nut onto the washer. The heat may help break the seal if it's been tightened too much.
Remember to disconnect the alternator.
I assume the sump plug is steel.

Re: Sump plug.
Thanks all.
No, there is nothing left it is very nearly flush with the sump so no purchase at all.
I might drill and tap it 8 or 10 mm left hand if I can. Failing this, I will take the sump off and take it to work.
Odd thing is the oil is clean.
On the upside I'm chuffed with her !

Re: Sump plug.
Are you sure it is sheared off?
There are some sump plugs which use an hex key to remove them. I imagine they would look flush to the sump.
