Goodridge Rear Hose Adaptor

#1 Post by RodR »

Many many moons ago I bought a Goodridge set of hoses for my Sprint. I fitted the fronts, but being lazy I didn't fit the rear one.

I have the hydraulics drained at the moment as I have fitted the Trackerjack front conversion. I'll do a separate post on that, but a million thanks to Jon for his assistance.

So anyway I thought it a good time to fit the rear braided hose. The replacement hose has an adaptor supplied with it which threads into a swivel union on the hose (see the photos). I removed the old flexi OK, but when I went to fit the new hose the thread wouldn't start in the load sensing valve. I compared the threads of the old and new, the Goodridge hose is definitely about 0.5mm larger diameter.

I'm pretty sure the thread in the LSV is 3/8"UNF, but the adaptor supplied has the cuts in the nut to indicate it's a metric, and the measurements would add up to that as well. So I think the adaptor supplied is the wrong one and I therefore need to buy an adaptor to 3/8". My problem is I have no ideal what the other end of the adaptor is. It has a concave seat, has a finer thread than metric or UNF, and is about 9.7mm dia over the thread (again see the photos). From the web it seems like it could be JIC or NPT - any ideas?

Thinking about it maybe the easiest solution is to retain the existing fittings and simply use another fitting to adapt the metric male to UNF male!

There's plenty of adapters available, though my guess is it's JIC. Be interested to see how you get on as I shall shortly be fitting the same hose to my LSV which I'm currently refurbishing. I have not yet looked at the Goodridge end to work out what it is or what adapter if any I require.

I think its ok. The metric end is in the braided hose and the other end shown is jic which is unf. try the female brake pipe fitting on the end of that adapter if you havent already :) (the cut to indicate metric can be there if only one end is metric )

Yes but the angle of a JIC fitting is 37 degrees vs 45 so presumably you'd still need an adapter?

I did try the adaptor both ways, but it definitely fits only one way, and it has to be right, as the cones are right. If it were the 'other' way there would be two convex cones together - inside the swivel coupling there is a convex seat. I also tried fitting the 3/8 nut that secures the axle end and that doesn't fit either thread on the adaptor. I'm convinced it's metric, it has the same pitch as 3/8" but measures exactly 10mm dia over the thread.

The thread that fits into the swivel coupling is definitely different all together, it has a different o/d and clearly has more threads per inch.

It may well be the guy who put my set together picked up the wrong adaptor, and that they are usually sent correctly, otherwise everyone who has fitted one would have a problem.

I have plumped for a metric to imperial adaptor, it means another joint which isn't my ideal solution, but I suspect hunting for the correct adaptor could be a PITA.

Incidentally I did email Goodridge to ask what the thread is, but had no response.
