Starter issue

Hi,
I'm in the process of putting my '75 Toledo back on the road following a 3 year lay up. I have kept it turned over and the brakes free etc during that time.
Anyway, last Saturday was due to be MOT day when it appeared that the battery packed up, so I purchased a replacement today, only to find I just get a loud click when trying to start it, very frustrating!
So, I'm guessing either Solenoid or Starter motor issues? I'm not sure what is the best way to find out what the problem is now, can anyone advise please?

If you get the loud click, that is the solenoid, so that's OK, must be the starter. But check all the connections and the engine earth strap before you rush out and buy a new one!

I have reconditioned 1500 starter motors here in Stourbridge...

It's a Toledo, so an inertial starter with a separate solenoid.

There is another thread on this problem. It could be dirty connections dropping the voltage.

Tony (MIG Welder) has a design for a loom that sorts it out.

Hi I had a similar problem with my Dolomite 1300. I cleaned and rubbed down all of the connections and the solenoid and this cured the problem.I wrote about refurbishing the starter in the members section.

You could have a sticky brush or a dead spot on the commutator due to the indolence.
You can turn the shaft by hand from the end of the starter and try it again. It may have a pressed on cap which levers off revealing the end of the shaft and this is the bit you can turn.

Also try tapping the bid of the starter with a small hammer, which may shock free a sticking brush and restore contact...

Always do the easy things before removing starters...

It turned out that it was very worn out and burned out. I managed to get it rebuilt at Auto Electrics in Redditch for next to nothing £30 + VAT, fab place I highly recommend them, they even had original old core to rebuild the starter motor so I got to keep it nice and original :-)
