Sprint 4 headlight : adjusters and halogens

#1 Post by olr159w »

Two things.

First I just found I need a new headlight adjuster because one of them has snapped. These are just plastic bolts as far as I can tell but seem to market for GBP10 for two. This is a ridiculous price. Is there somewhere that sells them for a price that's reasonable?

Secondly with respect to halogen conversion you can see quite a few options on ebay :

You can see a complete set of 4 units and bulbs for as low as 40 quid. Thoughts?

thks

Fit relays first, then check to see if you need to go 'halogen'.
I'm pretty sure the sealed beam units are filled with halogen anyway.....?
There are many posts on here discussing the merits/demerits of individual makes of halogen replacements, some appear to be much better than others.
I attended the Moffat car rally last weekend, as usual there were many Stags, all lined up. One looked wrong, it had aftermarket lamps fitted that just didn't look right, all the other cars were fine. So as well as light performance, you need to judge the aesthetics.

I don't think I need halogens. I always thought the original 4 beams were quite good. It's a long time since the car went out in the dark anyway.

Anyone have any suggestions for sourcing headlamp adjuster bolts?

cheers

You don't NEED halogen lights! The failing supply of tungsten sealed beam units, which are no longer manufactured, will soon enough FORCE us all into a workable substitute!

I can't suggest an alternative supplier of headlamp adjusters. Failure of these seems to be a very common problem, especially in the UK climate! They lie untouched for years, gathering mud and crap, then snap when you try to adjust them. For the inners, I managed to salvage 2 backless bowls from a total of 10 that I had in stock, enough to supply my Sprint. From an even larger number of outer Dolomite bowls, I didn't get 1 workable one and fell back on my collection of Triumph Vitesse bowls These are nowhere near as exposed to road muck, salt, water etc and I reckon on average 3 out of 4 can be salvaged and cleaned, lubed and re-used. These older design bowls have metal screws into a nylon clip and the whole thing protected by a rubber (or plastic, depending on vintage) gaiter which is much more amenable to WD40, Plus gas or your penetrating oil of choice! Having stripped and freed them, smother the metal screws with copper ease grease to ensure they stay free and refit the bowls with tapping screws and spire nuts rather than pop rivets, so the bowls can be easily removed for future cleaning!

Steve

Note, the adjusting screws for Vitesse headlights are the same as those used on early Austin Minis, Moggy Minors and a hundred other British cars, are readily available and about £2 for each screw/clip combo. But you need the early design bowls to use them, which, of course, are NLA! I have a few more Vitesse ones here, but as ever, shipping to your part of the world won't be cheap!

Inner and outer sealed beams are in stock at Rimmer, have been for a while. £18 each including vat, plus shipping.

So Rimmers have bought up some NOS. They won't last forever!

Tungsten bulbs of all sorts, whether household or motor are being phased out. Whether there is an environmental reason behind this, i'm not sure. But manufacturers are not making them. (except perhaps in China, where they don't CARE) So when they're gone, they're gone!

I'm ok on the bulbs for now. All four working per earlier email - one was a solder fix and the other I happened to have a spare.

But those adjusters.... 5 quid for a cheap plastic screw is daylight robbery.
