Any tips to remove the water pump please ?
Have removed the inlet manifold, pump cover and head.
Have just got spanners, sockets and an engine lift.

Re: Sprint water pump removal
This is my home made puller I fabricated from an exhaust clamp and steel disc; I use a slide hammer with it.
The bolt head on top of the pump is a left handed thread; if you are lucky, turning the bolt anti clockwise will see the pump release itself prior to the bolt undoing, but 3 times out of 4 I find I have to use the puller.

On my 1850 (same type of pump) I used Rimmers tool, which is simply a steel ring welded to a left hand bolt. With the slide hammer the internals came out pretty easily but the brass cage was a bugger. I made an extractor tool after querying on this site, but even so it took a lot of swearing to finally get it out.

Re: Sprint water pump removal
Even the unabridged version with annotations and a slide hammer won't always shift the brass cage. Not sure that the oval washer and bolt type always work. But neither am I clear why re-building a pump in the brass cage stuck in the block is a problem.
It may take some chutzpah to get the new pump into the cage properly. But I have a tool for that. It puts tentpegs in as well.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Changing the o rings would be my concern if the brass cage stays in.

Re: Sprint water pump removal
If it's welded in as solidly as mine is, and it really is solid - the slide hammer had no effect whatsoever -, I don't think thats a worry. I've got no leeks, now the infernals have been replaced. And as it was a case of do that, or have the car stand around for a week while I got (wasn't there a Saab one for the job?) or had made the extractor, I though it's gotta be worth a try. I seem to have got away with it this time, anyway.

Re: Sprint water pump removal
Its probably okay to use the graham method on a stuck cage but I have 2 points...
Point 1 is can you replace the bottom bush with a cage left stuck in? I havent ever managed it, but then the cage always comes out for me.
Point 2 is hit the shaft back in with soft faced hammer by all means but dont do it with all the other bits on the shaft so you can see the bearing is seated deep enough and then fit the oil seal. Never hit the top of the pump with the top seal in place of you will break it and end up with mayonaise in the sump.
