I have my Sprint insured for £6,500 with a fixed payout, all being assessed and agreed by the insurance company, and mine is very far from being close to mint. With that in mind, I'd consider thinking carefully about insurance values for that pride and joy that you think is a bit ropey that you bought for a ton a decade ago from a mate down the pub!

As I'm sure most of you know, car club valuations are always on the high side. My Lotus Elan Sprint was valued by Club Lotus at about £42,000. When I tried to sell it in spring 2016 I had no takers and was glad in the end to sell it to a dealer for a little over £30,000. He tried for a year to sell it at £39,950 without success and it eventually went for less than £35,000, so he didn't make much on it having kept it for a year. This was an immaculate car, completely restored on to a new chassis and every component rebuilt. So don't expect your car to fetch insurance money should you try to sell it!

Brown Dolomites are great as the colour creates a talking point if not a whole conversation and get's the car noticed.

I've now raced the only Dolomite Sprint in NZ for years, but ever since I've started racing, not only has it been the only brown Dolomite Sprint but as far as I know, the only brown race car in any series or class.

That talking point alone has got it mentioned on its few televised appearances and has also had more than its fair share of race pictures published in magazines.

I quite like the nickname it has in the ERC series I race in, "the flying turd". Probably appeals to more people that the BL name of "maple'.

I'm pleased to see that the seller is holding out for a good sum on that car, I don't think it is ott if the really is as immaculate and original as the ad says. Good restored sprints fetch around 10k, an original minter more so why not 7.5 for a 1500HL? Sprints have 'survived' for the number produced far better than anything else due to the number of reshells. If good other models are now too expensive in their own right to be just seen as body donors then very bloody good imo.

If brown or auto are not your thing just keep looking for the example that does float your boat, don't talk down values because it's not your taste.

Prices do seem to be on the up. I have been looking for a 1300 fwd for months now and anything with no rust is northwards of £2,500. I have seen dreadful ones with an asking price like that. (Although they are still for sale!!) People are asking close to £5,000 for a good one and don't seem to be prepared to move much on price.
I am reluctantly about to sell my very original, low mileage, but needing a re-paint Toledo. It will be interesting to see how that goes. I am tempted to ask a really silly price and then tell my wife that I have to keep it as there is no interest!
