why/how am I breaking front anti-roll bar bush retaining clips?

For everything to do with Dolomites, Toledos, FWD cars and Dolomite-based kitcars.

I've had to replace 2 this year alone, and it's getting a concern. I've even started wonding about upgrading them by welding in a gusset above the bush.

I'll see if I can get pctures of the break when the new one is on.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

The swing over part may not be fully seated in its top hook. Prise the top hook out a tad and be sure it locates fully before fitting.

Fitchetts make very good ones of these....better than OE IMHO.

Are you using polybushes instead of rubber? Maybe that's transferring more force or something.

I didn't fit any of the ones that have broken, but the one that's just broke looked fine when I replaced the previous one - I looked at it to see how the new one fitted.

Yes I'm using orange polybushes. If that's the problem then I guess I need to get stronger ones than you know who sells, or strengthen what I've got.
