Sprint conversion, engine in, set backs.

#1 Post by cleverusername »

It took a day, but I have managed to put a Sprint engine my 1500. It is big isn't it? Will the bonnet actually shut?

Alas I have discover two problems. One the timing cover is cracked, how I missed that on the bench I will never know. Hence my ad for one. I also have my doubts about using a Sabb 900 radiator, there isn't much room in the there, did I mention the engine is quite big?

Stress crack radiating from top offside corner. Thought it looked a bit mis-shapen when I fitted it. I don't think it is salvageable, the crack has spread about 2 inches and there is a small chunk missing. I am in Leeds.

Thanks for the offer, but it looks beyond saving I'm afraid.

The radiator that I and others use is from a Saab 9-3, not a 900, whether there is any difference I couldn't say.

On the 9-3 rad there is some superfluous plastic shrouding on the sides that has to be cut off carefully. Then it fits nicely, even with a Sprint engine!

I don't have one myself, but i'm sure a timing cover won't be hard to source. I just feel your pain for having to change it!

Own fault, should have looked more carefully, in hidesite it was warped.

As for the rad, I had another look, I think it will fit if I cut the top mount off which will foul the bonnet. Will also need a slim fan, the Saab unit is far too fat.

You will definitely need a slimline fan, I got away with the Saab one only because my Vauxhall engine sits 4" further back and even then, it was a tight squeeze! Spal fan is the favoured one around the forum.
