Dolomite 1500 started system
I am getting to the stage were I am ready to fire up my Sprint conversion. However being cheap I modified the 1500 wiring loom for a Sprint.
In hindsight maybe a poor idea, but I am stuck with it now. Good news, the ignition switch and windscreen wipers work. Bad new, the started motor is doing nothing. I benched checked it before fitting and a multimeter says the earth is fine. This leads me to believe that it is wired incorrectly.
My understanding is a small solenoid acts like a relay firing the started motor. I have wired a big fat cable to the battery and connection a white yellow wire to the solenoid. Not a thing, i beginning to suspect that the 1500 wiring diagram I have incorrect and this is the wrong connection.
Does anyone know which is the right wire?

Is it HL or non-HL? I think it was the HL that had the pre-engaged starter and the non-HL had the interia starter like the Dolly 1300/Toledo. You can download my copy of the Dolomite 1500 workshop manual from my BT Cloud

Quick check is remove the smaller trigger wire from the starter motor, stick multimeter red lead up it and earth the other meter lead. Get someone to turn the key to crank position and see if it goes 12v when cranked. If not, find a wire that does and use that

Re: Dolomite 1500 started system
Should be a middling fat white/red wire to fire the solenoid, the yellow/white is the ballast resistor bypass. that's why the starter won't turn!

Thanks, thought something wasn't right. Part of the problem is the wire colours are so faded I have to guess at some of them.
So I think I am looking for white and pink after 40 odd years.

Beware! There IS a white and pink wire in the loom around the n/s leg! This is NOT the start lead, it's a "spare" ignition auxilliary feed! If it's any help the red normally stays pretty red on these wires. The wire you are looking for is also about twice as thick as a "normal" size wire!

Or put a multimeter on the lead to test it.

Re: Dolomite 1500 started system
OK I got the thing to turn over with the red and white wire, but it has created another mystery. The red and white wire goes into a five pin plug and then another red an white wire comes out the same side. Only by bodging those connectors together could I get it to turn.
However I can't find where or what this plug is suppose to connect to. I assume it must go somewhere and I can't just ignore it. #
Any ideas?

Re: Dolomite 1500 started system
Yes! This plug is a cross connect for manual/automatic trans choice. the loom plug contains 4 wires, 2 white/red and 2 green. on manual cars the 2 white/red wires are connected together with a jumper cable and the 2 greens go to the reverse light switch. On autos there is a sub loom and all 4 go to the inhibit/reverse light switch on the transmission. You probably have the sub loom you need somewhere, maybe still connected to the old gearbox reverse light switch?
