Gearbox and engine compatibility

#1 Post by peteoddcar »

Hi all,
Long time since I posted but I am finally getting round to re engine and add overdrive our Dolly.
So here is what it is currently
TR7 2L engine with parts swapped from the original 1850 ( by the previous owner so not quite sure what had to be changed )
Non overdrive Ex Vitesse box with 1850 bell and clutch
Sprint axle
Modified ( shortened ) 1850 prop shaft.

Ok so far ?

It’s worked well for about 12 years

What I want to know is can I bolt a Sprint o/d box onto my 1850 back plate.
If so what flywheel and clutch do I need.?

I have a sprint overdrive box and prop with all mounts etc from the donor car.

I also have a late 1850 box and overdrive with all mounts etc. So I think I may need to mospd the prop again?

Any suggestions welcome

You'll need to source a Sprint adaptor plate. If you use one of those to enable the Sprint 'box to be used, the Sprint prop should fit the gap between it and the Sprint axle.

As for clutch, the Sprint 'box input shaft has the lesser number (9?) of splines than the late 1850 'box (20?). The early 1850 'box has the same as the Sprint, so your eventual choice of 'box will dictate the clutch. If keeping the TR7 engine, then I suspect the Tr7 flywheel.

As it happens, I do!

I'm in Stourbridge and can post, but am going to NEC on Sunday if coincidence strikes...?

If it is a vitesse box in there at the moment, the clutch will fit.
At least in terms of cover and plate, I resume the bearings are the same.
I think my TR7 engine uses the tr7 flywheel (from memory) but the 1850 one is a bit lighter. My car also has spriny od box and axle, and is nicely matched.

Ok all good so far - I have sent a pm regarding the sprint adapter plate.
Seems I’ll go Sprint gearbox

A couple more questions-
1.Which Starter Motor? I have 2 1850 units.

2. Can any one tell me how to change the centre bearing on the Sprint Prop its the type with a CV centre joint - just 2 hardy spicers
The rubber on the centre bearing is perished.Other than that the prop seems good
I could get it reconditioned I guess, any one had experience with Specialists.?
