1850 and Sprint front bumpers compatible?

#1 Post by ham204 »

I suppose the title says it all. I'm not too concerned about the holes on the underside that fit the under riders as I can have them drilled locally.

I think all the Dolomite range of bumpers are the same.

Okay....

Almost but not quite indeed....

The earliest of the early 1850s share the same bumpers as the 1500fwd.
These have captive nuts welded to brackets inside (so no bolt head is visible from the outside).

All other Dolomites and the 1500TC have the same bumpers,
although the underriders were changed c. 1975 or 6.

PS With the correct bracketry early 1850 bumpers will fit later cars because the body attachment points are the same.

Thank you all. Cost of rechroming mine plus shipping comes to over 600pds so buying a new 1850 bumper and having it customised to take the under riders becomes a very attractive option!

Thank you for that. So the Sprint brackets will not fit the early 1850 front bumper?

No,

although I dare say they could be adapted?

Be careful of "NEW" bumpers as sold by some well-known UK suppliers.
Sometimes they are poorly re-chromed bumpers with a sticky protective cloth applied. The rechroming is on the outside (visible) surface only. (no idea how they managed that). Trying to get this sticky protective layer off invariably damages the chrome, which is thinner than a very thin thing.

Not true... as you say, there is a very early type with internal brackets (which ive never seen fitted on any Dolomite or 1500FWD) , but there are 2 versions of the later bumper with visible bolt heads. Early - 1972 to 75 - with the bigger rubbers on the overriders have seperate brackets for the overriders that bolt to the top of the bumper brackets, whereas on later cars the overriders botl to the bumper itself. So late bumpers have 2 extra holes and a slightly different profile to the underside. They will interchange, a late bumper will fit an early car but leave 2 extra holes visible underneath, and and an early bumper will fit a late car but you will need to drill some holes and slightly clearance the bumper round the overriders.

Oops - I have one of those, for the rear bumper. I haven't tried to take the cloth off but once you have mentioned it, I will soak it in white spirit or diesel overnight when I come to it.

Thanks for sharing the info.

1850s up to chassis number 4109 have the bumpers with the internal brackets ie no bolt heads.
