Drilling Holes for brake pipe clips?
Next task for me is to refit the rest of the brake lines, which involves the run along the front chassis leg (which was replaced years ago). It doesn't have holes for the brake pipe clips in it though, so I need to drill them. The clip I have here is 1/4" round the base of the bit that goes in the hole - do I need a 1/4" bit or can I use a metric equivalent (I guess 6 or 6.5mm) without it falling out?

The clip hole on these is pretty critical on size, if it's even a tiny bit too big, the clip won't stay in place! Since 6mm is slightly OVER 1/4" even that might be a bridge too far! As Murdo said, you can try by experiment on a spare bit of steel and if that doesn't work, fork out for a 1/4" drill bit, i'm sure they are still available!

Or buy some new clips, I bought some from Robsport (numpty9 on ebay but 'phone was easy) and where I couldn't re-use the old ones I found I had to drill the hole with a larger drill bit, as Steve says the size is that critical. The new ones are black plastic, the old ones were white. And I bought way more than the number needed as spares, and used them!

There are 25.4mm in one inch, so 1/4" = 6.35mm

Controversial but why not buy an imperial drill bit? They aren't difficult to find.
Alternatively have you considered using something like a small P clip which can be attached using a self tapper?

My bad Ian, I was remembering my clutch pipe conversion on the Carledo where I put the 6mm pipe into an imperial union for the master cylinder and got it the wrong way round, I had to drill the 1/4" union to take a 6mm pipe which is what made me think it was that way round.
