I seem to remember that there is a small split pin in either end as there is a small hole drilled through the of the shaft.

if the shaft is totally clean you should see something.

Stick a long screwdriver down the other end and lightly tap it out but not too hard else it can easily be damaged.

And when you are at it you can check the oil supply to it also. Almost all sprints I've seen had the plug in the cam bearing cap too deep pressed in almost blocking the oil supply hole.
