I have just received my car tax reminder today which runs out on the 30th April 2018, so I know I have got to pay for at least another 6 months.
My Sprint will be 40 years old this year and was first registered on the 1st November 1978, please can you tell me on what date it will become tax free.

Your car under the present law will be exempt from the first of april 2019, unless you can prove it was built earlier than the registration date in the log book.

I tried to do mine before 1st April (13th March) and was told after a phone call to the DVLA that I would need to send in my log book (which had a registration date of 5th January 1978) with proof of a 1977 build date (built on 25th May 1977)
This I duly did with a covering letter explaining I was wishing to change the vehicle class to 'historic' to enable me to tax from the 1st April as my VED expires at the end of March. (Great forward thinking, I thought...)
Rang the DVLA on 5th April, no record of them having received my letter or documentation, I was told to wait another week and contact them again...
I asked do I need to SORN and was told no, but don't use the vehicle on the road.
Fortunately, I only sent a coloured photocopy of the heritage certificate & I have retained a scan of the logbook that I sent...
Fingers crossed that there is a backlog in this dept and my historic class log book will be winging it's way back to me in due course...

I think you may be a year out. My MGB was registered 1st Jan 1977 and got in because they accept anything before the 8th of Jan without proof of construction. On that basis yours will be eligible next January and wont need the proof because it was registered on the 5th. They only work on complete years.The current DVLA page on this subject is showing 1976 built vehicles as now tax exempt . Seems a bit unfair as they are manipulating it to 41 years but they are trying to screw the last penny out of us. I am guessing that the MOT will be a similar thing, complete years only.
Going to have 3 years to wait for my 1980 Dolomite.

Very unfair, how dare they let cars be exempt even if it means waiting another year. and its from April not Jan. as for MOT it is based on the REGISTERED date not build date and takes effect as soon as the car is 40 years old.

Yep, same day as my Sprint (reg 1/8/78) under current policy, your car will be VED free from April 1st 2019!

I have read somewhere that this may change from April 1st to January 1st of the same year, as DVLA catch up with themselves, but no date for the change has been finalised. Or it may be speculative BS!

Quick update, I made my 4th call to the DVLa today as it has been 4 weeks since sending off my documentation. The customer service advisor said that they don't appear to have any record of my documents arriving at the DVLA with the inference now that they must have become lost in the post and not at their end...
I asked what we do now and was told that I would need to purchase a duplicate V5c from them for £25, I asked if this would be with the change to historic class and was told no, this would be a PLG's and would take 3-5 working days to arrive. I then need to take this to the local PO and where I can then tax it as historic class.
DVLA web site states that vehicles registered between 1st Jan - 7th Jan 1978 do not need to provide evidence of a 1977 build date, I wonder how up to speed the local Post office staff are up to speed on this?
All-in-all, very disappointed in the whole process...

Sorry you have had a bad time with DVLA.

I've just been through the same process. Registration date 11th Jan 1978 (just too late)!! However build date July 1977

Rang DVLA in February and then sent V5 and dating evidence to them and got the build date registered with them - no problem.

Went to my local Post Office the other day to change tax class to Historic and get free tax. The staff were very switched on. It seemed that their IT system was well connected to the DVLA system, as it already knew my Sprint was MOT'd and that the car was eligible.

Simple taps on their screen was all that was needed - just signed the V5 for them to send away, and got a receipt for the tax in case I was stopped. Whole process took about 3 minutes.

On the DVLA info page, the tax status changed from SORN to Taxed about two days later. Just waiting for new V5 now.

Hi Peter, I envy you...

My duplicate V5 arrived this morning & dutifully I queued at the local PO again to be told that I can't tax as the system still says no. On ringing the DVLA for the 5th time, 'Gemma' advises me that I need to send my V5 back to them to get changed to hhistoric class, I explain that we've been here before and that I've just paid £25 for a duplicate V5 with PLG taxation class and I was advised by 'Reece' on a previous call that the PO will change this as he couldn't do this.
I now need to send my V5 back to DVLA, with original MOT cert & a V10 to their taxation team. I am told I will need to wait 10 working days and can expect this back for the 1st May. Which is frustrating as I need to use the car on the 29th April, so I can only assume if this doesn't arrive early then I will need to re-tax the car for a brief period until DVLA finally sort this out...
Needless to say I will again scan all docs and this time send recorded delivery...
What annoys me most is you try to forward plan & to do the right thing, then you have to go through so much bureaucratic crap...

Seems that your paperwork got lost - good job you didn't send a valuable Heritage Certificate.

I did slightly differently in that I applied early only to have the build date established as 1977. The new V5 I received had no changes, as they no longer put a note of build date in section 3. (that's what I was told)
However, on the DVLA info page, the build date changed from 1978 to 1977.

Subsequently I went to the Post Office to apply for Historic status, and no V10 needed, all done by screen.

That is good information Peter.
My car is similar in that it is a '79 build but the DVLA have both the registration and manufacture as 1980.
Now I need a Heritage certificate.....
