1850 timing chain
1850 timing chain
I’ve just changed the timing chain on my 1850, but I appear to be slightly off, the Haynes manuals destructions are a bit vague to say the least, is there a better guide on how to do this? Or any helpful, markers to use on the sprockets?

Only the chain and what is off? The camshaft?

Head was off, the chain, guides and tensioner have been changed. There seems to be a lack of markers to show when the crank is at TDC when the timing chain cover is off. The Haynes seems to suggest refitting the cover to set to TDC which can’t be right? Followed by a lot of messing about with the top guide, this has ended up with the top sprocket fixing bolts about 1/4” off from the hole in the cam shaft

From the front of the engine the only mark is the one on the timing chain cover. There is a mark on the flywheel but they invariably get replaced incorrectly. What I used to do is set no.1 piston at TDC with the cover on. Remove the cover taking care not to move the crankshaft. Then make a mark on the crankshaft right where the main bearing cap fits the block. I usually find true TDC by using a degree wheel but the mark on the timing chain cover will suffice in this case.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years.
