My 1850 auto has numerous oil leaks both crank seals sump etc so a couple of weeks ago pulled the engine and transmission out. At which point I noticed leaks from the crusty looking head gasket:(
I finally plucked up the courage earlier to remove the head. Being aware of stud issues hence putting it off for so long. To my joy I got all five studs out! All were tight especially the one nearest the timing chain and the centre one. But with lots of WD-40 and sweat got them out by locking two nuts together.
To my surprise was the condition of the internals. Every is in excellent condition in keeping with its 69k. Working on these old cars is a real joy. Especially compared to the modern plastic junk I spend my working life with!
People condemn British Leyland. But every job I do on my dolly's surprise me how well built and engineerd they was.

Re: 1850 head removal!!!
Oh dear I thought, another sad tale of someone having difficulty trying to get the head off a Sprint/1850 so nice instead to read someone posting that it was actually fine! Sometimes I think the forum gives a bad impression because of course you only normally read about things going wrong, not those times when everything came apart and back together easily. So with that I tip my hat to you sir for flying the flag!

Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)
Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

Re: 1850 head removal!!!
Must admit wasn't looking forward to it with all the tails of disaster!! Two studs were buggers!! Luckily the older I get I get more patient. No hammers used! I actually studied the Haynes manual before hand. But rip moderns to pieces without a second thought. The dolly is fun and rewarding. Cutting my teeth for the sprint rebuild
